Can cold email get your Gmail account suspended?
Yes, it can, in three different ways with three different lengths. Google's pages say which is which.
Short answer
Yes. Going over a sending limit stops new emails for up to 24 hours [1]. Google also says that "If a user exceeds their sending limits, their account might be suspended" [2], and that "User accounts that send spam might be permanently restricted from sending email" [3]. Staying far below the limits and writing only emails people are glad to get keeps you out of all three.
Three things that can happen
| What | Usual cause | How long |
|---|---|---|
| A sending pause | Too many emails or recipients in a day | Up to 24 hours [1]; for personal Gmail, "within 1 to 24 hours" [4] |
| A pause after many bounces | Many emails to addresses that do not exist | "You may be able to send emails again after 24 hours." [5] |
| A suspended account | Going over the limits [2] | Until it is restored |
| A permanent sending restriction | Sending spam [3] | Possibly permanent |
During a pause you can still read mail and use your other Google services; only sending stops [1]. That is little comfort if the mailbox is the one your customers write to, which is why the mailbox you already use deserves more caution than a spare one.
What actually gets a cold emailer into trouble
- Volume close to the limit. The limits are 500 a day for personal Gmail [6] and 2,000 for Workspace [7]. Cold email at that volume is far past what one person writes.
- Bounces. Bought or guessed addresses bounce, and many bounces in a day trigger their own pause.
- Spam reports. Google asks all senders to keep the spam rate below 0.3% [8]. At 50 emails a day that is less than one report in a week, so every email has to be one the person would not mind getting.
- Bursts. Forty emails in a minute does not look like a person.
Habits that keep the mailbox safe
- Start at about 20 a day and rise slowly; see warming up the inbox you already use.
- Stay under 50 a day per mailbox, follow-ups included.
- Write to business addresses you found on the organisation's own site, not guessed patterns.
- Stop at the first run of bounces; see what 550 5.7.1 means.
- Give every recipient an easy way to say no, so "no" is never a spam report.
How Honest Intros protects the mailbox
Honest Intros caps each mailbox at 20 emails a day at first, rising by 10 a day to at most 50, follow-ups included, and keeps a personal Gmail address at 20. It spaces emails through the recipient's working hours. Three bounces among the last thirty first emails pause new first emails until you have looked. Nothing is sent that you did not approve.
Questions
How long does a Gmail sending suspension last?
A pause for going over a sending limit lasts up to 24 hours. A suspended or restricted account lasts until it is restored, and for spam it may be permanent.
How many cold emails a day can I send from Gmail without getting suspended?
Google publishes limits, not a safe number. The limits are about 500 a day for personal Gmail and 2,000 for Workspace; for cold email, staying at 20 to 50 a day keeps you far from both.
Can I still receive email while Gmail sending is paused?
Yes. Google says users can still access the account, get incoming email and use other Google services during the pause.
Will a separate domain protect my main Gmail account?
It protects the main domain's reputation, at the cost of the emails not really coming from you. Sending from your own mailbox works if the volume stays low and the emails are wanted.
