Cold email to plumbers: examples that start from the firm's own site
A plumber is on a roof or under a sink when your email arrives. Short, specific and easy to answer later is the only version that works.
Short answer
Write three short parts: one observation from the firm's own website that starts "I saw", a line on who you are and one benefit, and an offer to send a short 3-point outline. Keep it readable on a phone in ten seconds. Many plumbers are sole traders, and in the UK sole traders count as individuals who need to have consented to marketing email [1], so check before you write.
Why most plumber cold emails are ignored
They are written for an office with a procurement team, or they promise leads. A plumbing business is often one to ten people with a phone and a van. What gets a reply is a short note that fits on a phone screen and refers to what the firm says about itself.
Three example emails
The firms here are fictional; each sentence stands in for a real line from a real site. Each email has an observation (highlighted), a line on who the sender is with one benefit, and a small offer.
A UK firm, for a job-scheduling app
The sentence on their site: “Gas Safe registered, with emergency call-outs covered 24 hours a day.”
Hi Ridgeway Plumbing team,
I saw Ridgeway Plumbing is Gas Safe registered and covers emergency call-outs 24 hours a day.
I'm Tom from Callout Book. We help plumbing firms keep a clear diary when emergency jobs interrupt booked ones, with customers told by text when the plan changes.
If useful, I can send a short 3-point outline for keeping the diary clear when emergencies come in at Ridgeway Plumbing. Worth sending over?
If this isn't relevant, just tell me and I won't write again.
Best,
Tom
A US contractor, for a quoting tool
The sentence on their site: “We offer free estimates on water heater replacement.”
Hi Mr Okafor,
I saw you offer free estimates on water heater replacement.
I'm Luis from Quote Lane. We help plumbing contractors send a written estimate from the van before they drive off, with photos and the options on one page.
If useful, I can send a short 3-point outline for sending estimates the same day at your business. Worth sending over?
If this isn't relevant, just tell me and I won't write again.
Best,
Luis
A Canadian firm, for a parts supplier
The sentence on their site: “Serving Halifax and surrounding areas with repairs, renovations and new builds.”
Hi Harbourside Plumbing team,
I saw Harbourside Plumbing serves Halifax and the surrounding areas with repairs, renovations and new builds.
I'm Nadia from Maritime Pipe Supply. We help plumbing firms in Nova Scotia get fittings the same day, with a counter order you can place by text.
If useful, I can send a short 3-point outline for getting fittings the same day for Harbourside Plumbing. Worth sending over?
If this isn't relevant, just tell me and I won't write again.
Best,
Nadia
What to notice on a plumber's website
- Emergency cover: 24-hour call-outs mean a diary that is constantly rearranged.
- Registrations and areas: a registration they display, the towns they serve.
- Types of work: repairs, renovation, new builds, boilers, commercial.
- How customers ask for a price: a form, a phone number, free estimates.
- Whether it is one person or a team: "we" and a staff page mean different emails.
Mistakes to avoid
- Emailing a personal address you cannot source. Use the address the firm publishes for business enquiries.
- Writing "I hope this finds you well". Start with the observation.
- Long paragraphs. Three short parts are all the email needs.
- Assuming a company. Many plumbers trade under their own name, which changes the rules in the UK.
- Offering a demo. An outline they can read in a minute is smaller than a call.
Rules to check
United Kingdom. Sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals and need consent first [1]; here is how to tell. Limited companies and LLPs can be emailed with an opt-out. United States. CAN-SPAM applies to business email: "The law makes no exception for business-to-business email" [2]. Include your postal address and honour opt-outs.
How Honest Intros writes these
Every first email Honest Intros drafts has the same three parts as the samples above, and the observation has to be backed by a sentence found on the plumbing firm's own site: a check looks for that sentence before the draft can reach you, and drafts that fail are set aside. You see sample emails, each next to its source sentence, and approve the campaign once; if you want more control, you can turn on approving each email. Nothing is sent before your yes. Honest Intros is free and sends from your own Gmail. See personalising from their website.
Questions
Can I send cold email to plumbers?
Often, but check the kind of business first. In the UK many plumbers are sole traders, who count as individuals and need to have consented. A limited company can be emailed with an opt-out.
What should I write to a plumber in the first line?
One fact from the firm's own site starting "I saw", such as its emergency cover, its registration or the areas it serves. Then who you are and one benefit.
Should a cold email to a plumber be short?
Yes. It will be read on a phone between jobs. Three short parts and a yes-or-no question are enough.
